Former Red Wolf, Brett Carroll, Called Up Again (5/5/2008)

   Brett Carroll was soaking himself in the whirlpool after a Minor League game at Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday when a coach passed by and told him to go into the manager's office. When Carroll hesitated, the coach told him he might want to get in there right away. That's when Carroll and his teammates knew something was about to change for the outfielder. Carroll was informed that he was being called up to give the Marlins another outfielder because Josh Willingham had been placed on the disabled list. Willingham missed the entire series against the Dodgers with a stiff back. The left fielder had been a force in the middle of the lineup, batting .341 while clubbing six homers and tallying 16 RBIs. "[The callup] came a little earlier than I thought," Carroll said. "You hate to see a guy like Willingham go on the DL, especially with the caliber year he was having." Carroll has not been doing so shabby himself of late. The 25-year-old ranked fourth in the Pacific Coast League in average (.418) and was the recipient of Player of the Week honors for the week ending April 27. This is Carroll's second stint with the big club in 2008. He played with the Marlins from April 1-5 while right fielder Jeremy Hermida was out. Carroll, who plays all three outfield positions, is known for his solid defense (Baseball America named him the best outfield arm in the Marlins' system in 2007). He recorded two assists in his short stint with Florida. Carroll has adjusted his mind-set this time around. "I'm just trusting myself and letting the game come to me a little more and not trying to force anything," said Carroll, who anticipates a role as a late defensive replacement and occasional spot starter. "My goal is to take advantage of every opportunity and establish myself."
