It won’t be long before another season of Major League Baseball is underway, as spring training games start next week. With that said, the Coastal Plain League announced that 44 CPL alums have been invited to spring training in 2010. 37 CPL alums were invited to spring training this year. Furthermore, 23 of the 30 MLB clubs are represented with at least one alum of the CPL in camp.

The American League had 21 CPL alums while the remaining 23 came from teams in the National League. Of the 44 players in spring training, 24 of them have experience in the Majors, having made their respective debuts in prior seasons. Two of those - Landon Powell (Athletics) and Tyler Colvin (Cubs) - debuted in 2009. Also included are three alums - Kevin Youkilis (Red Sox), Justin Verlander (Tigers), Ryan Zimmerman (Nationals) - that made their respective league All-Star teams this past . The 44 alums is seven more than the 37 alums invited in 2009.
 

All current CPL clubs were represented with at least one alum invited to spring training. Florence led the way with eight alums, while Fayetteville and Peninsula followed with five alumni each. Edenton, Thomasville, Wilmington and Wilson tallied four a piece, and Asheboro was next with three. Meanwhile, Outer Banks and Petersburg had two alums; and Columbia, Forest City (represented by Spartanburg, which is where the team was before it relocated to Forest City in 2008), Gastonia and Martinsville rounded things out with one alum each. Former franchises Durham (two alums) and Rocky Mount (one alum) also were represented.
