Three Red Wolves Named to CPL American Team

The RedWolves’ Stephen Carmon started the Coastal Plain League season struggling with the wood bat.  But he has quietly improved, and someone took notice. Carmon, the Camden native who plays his college baseball at USC Aiken, has parlayed his improvement into being named the starting shortstop for the American CPL All-Star team, which was announced by the league Tuesday.  Carmon joins teammates Trey Hernandez, a first baseman/designated hitter, and right-handed pitcher Patrick Dolan on the squad. The game is scheduled for Tuesday in Forest City, N.C.

Carmon struggled swinging early on and put his bunting skills to good use.  He went through one three-game stretch where he reached base by bunt six times. He has four sacrifice bunts on the season.

But quietly, Carmon has begun swinging the bat better and had raised his average to .296 heading into Tuesday night’s game at Morehead City. His lone home run came June 21 against Fayetteville.

Hernandez, from Texas A&M Corpus Christi, has been swinging the bat well all season. He leads the RedWolves with a .333 average. He also has three home runs and team-best 31 RBI, which is third in the CPL. His eight doubles are also tops among the RedWolves.

Dolan, a Summerville native who plays at Charleston Southern, is 3-0 in seven appearances – five starts – with a 2.10 ERA. He has 32 strikeouts in 34 1/3 innings and opponents hit just .165 against him.

The three Florence players also join their coach, Russell Carter, on the American team. Carter was named the team’s head coach last week.  For a complete American team roster, visit the league’s Web site, http://www.coastalplain.com. The National team will be announced Wednesday.
