The Coastal Plain League announced Monday that Joe Sclafani of Morehead City was named the Rawlings Hitter of the Week, while Wilmington’s Zach Taylor and Martinsville’s William Scott were named Rawlings Co-Pitchers of the Week for week eight of action (July 21-25).
Sclafani, a sophomore from Dartmouth, played in four games on the week for the Marlins and finished with a .571 average. Of his 14 at bats, he had eight hits, one of which was good for a triple. Sclafani scored seven runs and drove in five, while tallying 10 total bases with a .714 slugging percentage, .684 on-base percentage, five walks, and a stolen base.
Taylor, a junior from Evansville made history on July 22 by allowing no hits, no walks, and no base runners, to become the first pitcher in CPL history to throw a perfect game. In his only appearance of the week for the Sharks, the 6-5, 220-pound right hander pitched a 9-inning gem against Fayetteville striking out four, and retiring 27 straight batters to earn the win.
Meanwhile, the 6-1, 185-pound Scott, threw a complete game for the Mustangs on July 24 against Forest City. The sophomore right-hander from Kennesaw State went nine innings, surrendering just five hits, and no earned runs. He struck out an impressive 13 batters, walked two, and held opposing batters to a mere .156 average to get the win.
