Former Florence RedWolves and Columbia Blowfish alum Michael Kohn made his Major League debut last night with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Kohn, a 13th round pick of the Angels in the 2008 Major League Draft started the top of the ninth inning against Boston. He went a 1/3 of an inning and gave up two runs on two hits and walked one before being relieved.
With his debut, Kohn is the eighth former RedWolves player and the first-ever Blowfish alum to make his debut with a Major League team. Furthermore, he is the the 37th Coastal Plain League alum, third in 2010, to debut.
Playing mostly first base or serving as the designated hitter for Florence in 2005, Kohn finished that summer batting .293. Of his 27 hits, four were for doubles and one a home run, while he also racked up 34 total bases, scored nine runs and drove in another 14. Kohn was also named as the reserve first baseman for the National CPL All-Stars that year.
In 2006, Kohn batted .186 with 21 hits for Columbia. He had eight doubles and a homer, as well as 15 runs and nine RBIs. Kohn also appeared on the mound twice for the Blowfish that season, pitching 1 1/3 innings. He walked six, surrendered four runs - three earned - and struck out one.
As a senior at the College of Charleston, Kohn got on the mound just to see what he could throw and reached 94-95 immediately; hence beginning his career on the mound. He pitched 13 innings in college, and then went through the Angels’ farm system rather quickly. A Spring Training invitee, he was sent to Double-A Arkansas before moving up to join the Salt Lake Bees (AAA). Through 26 games for Salt Lake, Kohn had a 1.95 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 28 innings of work.
