RedWolves drop sloppy contest to Grizzlies

RedWolves drop sloppy contest to Grizzlies

Jimmy Farmer

The Florence RedWolves committed three errors in the 9-5 loss to the Gastonia Grizzlies on Wednesday night at Sims Legion Park.

The RedWolves started quickly by scoring three times in the top of the first when Ben Peden (The Citadel) reached on an error (one of four committed by Gastonia) that allowed Chris Botsoe (Eastern Kentucky) to score before Brock Hallum (LIU-Brooklyn) singled home Cole Dubet (Saint Louis). Florence's scoring in the first was capped when Will Morgan (Old Dominion) reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Peden to score.

But Gastonia would answer the early offense from Florence by scoring six times in the first two innings capped by a grand slam to give the Grizzlies the 6-3 lead.

The RedWolves would answer back in the third when Peden hit a sacrifice fly that brought home Dubet to cut the lead to 6-4.

But that is all the closer the RedWolves would get, as the Grizzlies would add three runs in the fourth to cruise to a 9-5 victory.

Colby Lee (Francis Marion) took the loss tossing just two innings giving up six runs (four earned) on just three hits while striking out two.

The loss also snapped the RedWolves four game winning streak.

Florence (9-7) will look to start a new winning streak on Thursday when it travels to Lexington County to take on the Blowfish before returning home on Friday to take on Savannah.

Friday's home game will be the Pepsi game of the week as well as Alzheimer's Awareness night. The RedWolves will be wearing specialty purple jerseys that will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to find a cure for Alzheimer's.
