RedWolves add versatile duo

RedWolves add versatile duo

The Florence RedWolves and first-year head coach Ryan Vruggink announce the addition of Kenny Piper and Nathan Medrano to the 2019 roster.

Piper is redshirt sophomore utility player from Columbia College. He is a native of Florissant, Missouri.

"Kenny is a redshirt sophomore at Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri," Vruggink said. "He is coming off an injury last year but has had success in the early going so far this year."

In 16 games this season, Piper is hitting .291 with three home runs, four doubles, three stolen bases and 16 RBIs.

"The coaches at Columbia College are two guys that I have become close with in my time at Mineral Area College," Vruggink said. "Our other two assistant coaches both played for Coach Munns and Coach McAndrews, and when they called me about Kenny and told me more about him, it was an easy decision for me to add him to the roster. Kenny brings a lot of value as he is an extremely versatile player. In his time at Columbia, he has played shortstop, third base and catcher. Having those guys that can bounce around and play multiple positions is a big bonus during the summer."

Medrano is a freshman right-handed pitcher and infielder at St. Edward's University. He is a native of Gilroy, California.

"Nathan is entering his first year as a member of the St. Edward's baseball program," Vruggink said. "St. Edward's is a perennial top Division II program year in and year out. The coaches at St. Edward's are very excited about Nathan."

On the mound this year, Medrano has appeared in seven games going 0-3 with a 4.15 ERA and 15 strikeouts over 17.1 innings pitched. In five games at the plate this season, he is batting .200 with an RBI.

"He has seen time in the infield and as a starter on the mound and out of the bullpen," Vruggink said. "Nathan is a guy that is only going to get better as he picks up the speed of the game at the collegiate level and I am looking forward to his impact on the team on the mound and offensively this summer."

Host Families Needed

Host families are an important and much-appreciated part of the RedWolves organization. Local families have opened their homes to our players each summer, and their generosity has helped us make the RedWolves a successful part of the Florence community.

Host families provide room and board to a RedWolves player for the entire season. All RedWolves players are college student-athletes and are not paid to play in the Coastal Plain League per NCAA rules.

Becoming a host family can be a rewarding experience. Often players and families share a friendship that last long after the season ends. Also, becoming a host family will earn you FREE SEASON TICKETS!

If you are interested in becoming a host family, please email RedWolves General Manager Barbara Osborne at or call the RedWolves office at 843-629-0700.
