The Florence RedWolves drop a heartbreaker to the Asheboro Copperheads 7-6 on opening night at Sparrow Stadium.
Asheboro (1-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single after Trey Polewski (USC-Aiken) started the game with a leadoff triple. The Copperheads would plate three more in the second on three straight hits.
The RedWolves (0-1) would battle back with two in the third when Jake Swartz (Duke) singled home Reid Hardwick (Charleston Southern) and Joe Weisenseel (Ohio). Florence would tie the game with three in the sixth highlighted by a Weisenseel RBI single.
Asheboro would come back with a run in the eighth on a wild pitch. The Copperheads would tack on an important insurance run in the ninth on a single and a error to make it 7-5.
The RedWolves would battle back when Swartz scored on a RBI single by Michael Richardson (Ohio) to trim the lead to 7-6.
But that is all the closer the RedWolves would get as Zach Durfee (Siena) would strikeout with runners on second and third to end the game.
Culver Hughes (West Chester) took the loss going 2+ innings giving up one run on one hit, two walks and five strikeouts.
Zach Rice (West Chester) got the start and went 4 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking six and striking out five.
The RedWolves will travel to Macon on Friday May 31, 2019 to play the Bacon before returning home on Saturday June 1, 2019 to face the Fayetteville SwampDogs.
Saturday will be First Responders night where the RedWolves will honor the Florence 7. There will be a pregame tailgate for first responders, all first responders will get in to the game free with their ID. There will be a pregame ceremony to honor the Florence 7 and specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to the Florence 7 fund.
There will also be postgame fireworks on Saturday. Gates open at 6 pm and first pitch will be at 7 pm.
