RedWolves cannot complete comeback

The Florence RedWolves drop a heartbreaker to the Asheboro Copperheads 7-6 on opening night at Sparrow Stadium.

Asheboro (1-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with an RBI single after Trey Polewski (USC-Aiken) started the game with a leadoff triple. The Copperheads would plate three more in the second on three straight hits.

The RedWolves (0-1) would battle back with two in the third when Jake Swartz (Duke) singled home Reid Hardwick (Charleston Southern) and Joe Weisenseel (Ohio). Florence would tie the game with three in the sixth highlighted by a Weisenseel RBI single.

Asheboro would come back with a run in the eighth on a wild pitch. The Copperheads would tack on an important insurance run in the ninth on a single and a error to make it 7-5.

The RedWolves would battle back when Swartz scored on a RBI single by Michael Richardson (Ohio) to trim the lead to 7-6.

But that is all the closer the RedWolves would get as Zach Durfee (Siena) would strikeout with runners on second and third to end the game.
