RedWolves rally falls short

The Florence RedWolves fell to the Asheboro Copperheads 8-6 on Monday night at McCary Park.

The Copperheads (3-0) raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after two hits and a RBI groundout by the first three hitters.

The RedWolves (1-3) would answer back when Joe Weisenseel (Ohio) grounded into a double play that allowed Austin Ulick (Southern Illinois) to score and cut the lead down to 2-1.

The Copperheads would answer with a run-in bottom of the second to make it 3-1 before the RedWolves would answer back with Alex Mills (USC-Aiken) RBI single in the third to score JT Weber (Southern Illinois) to make it 3-2 Asheboro.

Asheboro would answer the Florence run once more in the bottom of the third with a sac fly to make it 4-2.

Florence would answer back in the fourth when Michael Richardson (Ohio) would hit a sac fly that allowed Zach Durfee (Siena) to score and make it 4-3.

Asheboro would explode for three in the fifth to increase the lead to 7-3, which is the score the game stayed until the top of the eighth.

In the eighth, the RedWolves would push across three of their own when Eldrige Figueroa (Arkansas Little Rock) tripled home Andrew Gough (Middlebury) and Durfee before Richardson singled home Figueroa to cut the lead down to 7-6.

Asheboro would add an insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth inning to make it 8-6.

The RedWolves would load the bases with two outs in the ninth, but a fly out and ground out would end the game and give Asheboro the 8-6 win.

AG Yowell (UTSA) took the loss for the RedWolves after going 4.0 innings allowing four runs on six hits and striking out two.

Figueroa, Richardson, Weber, Mills and Durfee all collected two hits apiece for Florence in the loss.

The RedWolves return home Tuesday June 4, 2019 to take on the Macon Bacon.
